e need more space. How many times have you said that to yourself? It seems like the pile of clutter gets bigger and bigger every day. Cell phones, laptops, backpacks, shoes, the list goes on and on. Oftentimes the problem isn ’t just a lack of space; the problem lies in spaces not being planned or used properly.
We all hear the terms multi-tasking and efficiency on a daily basis. A growing trend in remodeling is applying these principles to spaces in your home. Kitchens are no longer just kitchens; they have become the social center of the home for friends and family. Master bedrooms are now more commonly referred to as master suites, often with spa-style bathrooms and separate his and hers walk-in closets.
A detail being seen more often in remodeling projects is built-in lockers. Lockers and mudrooms have been popular in colder climates for years and are starting to gain a foothold here. Unused closets and alcoves can be converted into very clever lockers that will add character to any home while providing the much needed usable storage space. A large foyer is also a great place to add some well-designed built-ins.
Many people are also finding that kitchens are a great place to add small built-in desks and cabinets to keep family bills, files and a
computer. If the idea of a computer and paperwork in your kitchen isn’t appealing, cabinets can be designed and built to keep them hidden when they are not in use.
Some of the more poorly designed areas in older homes are bedroom closets. A small 2-foot-wide door, one shelf and a closet rod in a 6-foot-wide closet are not very practical. Using the same amount of space, you could add double doors and a closet organizer that could include multiple shelves, drawers and hanging rods to better utilize the space. The possibilities are endless.
Two of the most important factors in any project are design and execution. A great way to address both of these is to sit down with an experienced and qualified design / build remodeler. He or she will be able to listen to your needs and properly plan and remodel your home to maximize the space to fit your lifestyle.
